Myths about erectile dysfunction

Myths about erectile dysfunction

Get a group of men together and the conversation will likely cover a range of topics from work to travel, hobbies to sports but it’s unlikely that sexual health, and in particular erectile dysfunction (ED), will ever be freely discussed. That’s because it is still a topic that stirs feelings of embarrassment, shame, guilt, and inadequacy amongst many men – particularly if they are of the younger generation.

How many times have you heard that erectile dysfunction is only a problem for men over the age of 60? Or that medication is the only way to treat the issue? Our guess, probably more often than not when the topic is raised.

Impotence rates have more than doubled in the past 25 years, with almost 4.3 million men across the UK affected by it. By 2025 it is estimated that 322 million men worldwide will be affected by it and as it is often linked with increased risks of cardiovascular disease, dementia, and even early death, it’s time we debunk the myths and remove the taboos around this common sexual health issue.

Age is just a number when it comes to ED

While erectile dysfunction may be more common in older men, it can actually occur at any age. Some erectile functions change with age for example, erections may take longer to develop, may not be as rigid or may require more direct stimulation to be achieved. Men may also notice that orgasms are less intense, the amount of ejaculate is reduced, and recovery time increases between erection. While these changes are expected, a persistent inability to obtain a satisfactory erection is not a normal part of aging.

Erectile dysfunction is largely psychological

In the past, psychological factors alone were thought to cause the issue. But thanks to advances in medical science in the last few decades, medical specialists now know that physical conditions can cause or contribute to erection problems.

Many diseases or illnesses can cause an inability to achieve or maintain an erection, including diabetes, nerve damage, chronic diseases affecting the heart, lungs, liver, or kidneys and many more. Medications can also interfere with nerve impulses or blood flow to the penis. If you develop erectile function, it’s recommended that you have an appointment with your doctor to ensure there is nothing else ongoing that is causing the issue.

Once doesn’t mean you have a problem

It's normal to have trouble maintaining an erection on occasion, after all to produce an erection, a man needs a healthy brain and penis, healthy blood vessels and nerves and adequate amounts of testosterone. If any aspect of this system is affected, whether through problems in personal relationships, stress, fatigue, hormonal changes or illness, erectile function can be impacted but that doesn’t necessarily mean that you are experiencing erectile dysfunction.

Medication isn’t the only treatment

Contrary to popular belief, there are many options available to treat erectile dysfunction that don’t involve a visit to the GP. While medicated products can help and may have been the go-to for many experiencing these issues in the past, the demand for more natural products that can be enjoyed without side effects has led to the birth of a new generation of next-level sexual wellness products.
